A&D ANNUAL 2021

Martina Rizzo

Martina Rizzo’s ‘The Weaving Room’ is a calming and productive alternative to the traditional, anxiety provoking waiting experience at mental health care facilities that applies the textile craft weaving as a mindfulness intervention for individuals in these spaces. This initiative facilitates the individual’s journey towards recovery by revealing that personal growth is a non-linear path that requires resiliency as they weave through the many challenges in life, on and off the loom. The repetitive act of weaving provokes participants to develop a rhythm that allows them the potential and creative energy to capture their innermost sentiments, displayed through their selection of yarn colour and texture. Unity is achieved through the shared act of opening oneself up to express their vulnerabilities through their weaving in a shared space. The outcome of this intervention is a tangible manifestation of participants’ individual and collective journey to recovery.
