A&D ANNUAL 2021
Nani Graddon
Nani Graddon is an artist working on unceded Gadigal land. She works across many artistic mediums to contemplate contemporary Australian society and her place within it. Nani is interested in the institutionalisation of knowledge and how to encourage movement into often stationary definitions of people, objects, and histories. In her work ‘construct/deconstruct’ Nani purchases, assembles, then disassembles and returns an Ikea display cabinet. Whilst undertaking this hour-long task she contemplates: the instruction manual and specific tools prescribed in the construction of the display cabinet; the reproduction of knowledge within an institutionalised space as repeated and constrictive; the mess produced both in the construction and deconstruction of cultural institutions, and the use of an object for her own academic benefit without having to pay for it or return it in the condition she received it in.
