Thalia
Inspired by Greek mythology, Thalia’s design project is titled ‘Arethusa Square’ after the ocean and water nymph who maintained the ecosystem with her sisters and brothers. In response to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11, this project aims to provide a green and safe public space with quality service for Shanghai residents in the North Bund in the post-COVID-19 era. The design objective is to underpin a healthy ecosystem and biodiversity that prevents people from becoming infected by viruses and bacteria, while enhancing the happiness and sense of belonging in Shanghai as well as reduce pressure on people. The project emphasises the importance of building a harmonious neighbourhood, and draws the relationship between humans and nature closer. Developing an eco-friendly public space not only provides a safe activity space, but also maintains the ecosystem and biodiversity. The design response applies different approaches and theories, such as biophilic design and Daoism, and is underpinned by quantitative and qualitative research on the needs of Shanghai residents.
