Lucy Parkinson

Lucy Parkinson’s practice approaches the subject of the gaze and its role in maintaining perceptions of social success and failure in the context of a postfeminist cultural landscape. Her work is shaped by feelings of awkwardness and social tension, focusing closely on moments from everyday life where the pressures of being looked at become obvious. Lucy intentionally satirises these ridiculous outcomes, using humour to disarm traditional perspectives of acceptable social behaviour. She works with a combination of oil paint and oil pastel, and includes textual elements to construct complex visual narratives.
