Milla Āniwaniwa
Milla Āniwaniwa’s practice explores cultural and language preservation, enriching her connection to heritage through photography, video, and sound. Grounded in a decolonial perspective, her work highlights aural histories and the power of sound as a vessel for memory, healing, and reclamation. As a young Māori artist, she centres Te Reo Māori language in her practice to assert sonic sovereignty, and nurture the resilience of her wairua (spirit) and whānau (family). Her installation ‘Dear Waimarie’ combines sound, moving image, and painted mirrors with symbols that embody strength, regrowth, and transformation. Milla’s installation offers audiences an immersive encounter with intergenerational endurance, honouring her sacred lands.
