Sydney Dong

Sydney Dong’s work responds to realities often unseen. Through experimental video and her own body, the artist reveals how hidden structures continue to discipline women in contemporary China. What appears as freedom and diversity is reshaped by collective ideologies and algorithms into new forms of control. The title ‘The Sun Does Not Shine for All’ twists the idiom “????” (the sun shines on all), reminding us that light is not shared equally. With echoes of the ‘Song of the Four Seasons’ featured in the 1937 Chinese film ‘Street Angel’, the work lingers between shadow and hope.
