Shadow of Art
This was in response to an open call competition issued by the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art Study Centre to redesign their multifunctional lobby floor and provide a program to rejuvenate the immediate plaza entrance. There were many criteria and restrictions for this project - on budget and development possibilities. The strongest impression upon visiting the Plaça dels Angels is the great contrast between the brightness of the MACBA with its immediate context. It almost stands as like a beacon amongst the worn residental streets that surround it. The idea of the contrast between light and shadows involves the concept of the DISCOVERING. When a place is in shadow, your desire is to know what there is behind it. This, in our interpretation, referred to the MACBA Study Center aim, recalls the process of studying, of discovering what there is behind the art showed in the main museum, which is one of the goals of the Study Centre. Thus, we believe these intentions and characteristics can be metaphorically represented as “THE SHADOW OF ART”. With this project, we want to make clear what is the purpose of the MACBA study centre, which is to reveal the knowledge and process behind the production of the artworks shown in the main gallery, to deepen the audience’s experience. We want to convey the sense of discovery, and we have chosen to do it with a system that could allow us to create different areas in the hall, with different “levels” of light and shadows dedicated to the different activities.
