The creation of hybrid objects that encompass both the natural and the man-made, is reflective of the mediation of space between self and world, the blurred line between fiction and reality. The garden is an example of our mediated relationship to the natural world; specified allotments of utopia, where nature is controlled, contained, safe and pleasing. From this space, as from many others, we engage in enchantment, fantasy and fictionalization – creating chimera and ideology. Through embellishment of this natural‘refuse’, I hope to enchant the disenchanted, recognizing and elaborating upon the poetry in the prosaic. In celebrating the beauty in these natural objects through embellishment, I am making them more than what they are. Do we have to make things more than what they are in order to appreciate them?
